Trekking in Bali 2

>>read Part One

We woke to a crisp, chill morning. Clouds of moisture seem to blow right through you as they pour over the peaks around you.

We fill the water bottles, pack a bag and head out the door. Our goal today is neighboring Lake Tamblingan. Various sources talk about a number of temples around the lake and a trail that leads you right around. Despite lots of mentions in various sources, no one seems to have any specifics. We ask the front desk, they just sort of nod and seem to agree with whatever we say. OK...time to find out the old fashioned way.

Peru: Steeply Spiralling Stairway to the Andes

I'm having second thoughts. The steep stone path we've been slowly climbing for the last half-hour has disappeared and we're standing on a small section of terracing with terrifying thousand-metre drops on three sides.

Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. Perhaps we should have heeded the advice of the security guard who told us not to carry on.

Suddenly, Rob (the only other person on the tour foolish enough to attempt this with me) spots a small arrow pointing into what appears to be a sheer rock face.

Preparing for Your Adventure

It is often said by experienced hikers that the best way to train for spending time in the backcountry is simply to “go hiking.” This is often easier said than done, and while hiking does provide a great foundation for leg strength and overall conditioning there are several additional elements that should be considered.

For example, I recently took a group to Patagonia, Chile, to hike the Torres del Paine National Park and to explore the many glaciers of Southern Chile. This 75-mile loop is moderate in difficulty and provides a wide range of scenery in what has been labeled as one of the classic treks of world.

Hikers cast vote for scenic areas near Washington, D.C.

The weather is getting chilly on the East Coast and it’s time to get out and enjoy the season.

Some of the best places in the country to see the fall colors are no more than a two- or three-hour drive from the nation’s capital. So if you are planning a trip to Washington soon, make sure to budget time for a memorable hike in the region.

Study up on the Appalachian Trail, especially the section in Northern Virginia - www.appalachiantrail.org. Also visit this site, which offers exact conditions of fall foliage: www.foliagenetwork.com/reports/southeast-us/.

Moab Offers Beauty, Rugged Sports

If adventure travel has a Mecca, it's got to be Moab, Utah.

It's easy to find yourself somewhere between a rock and a hard place in Moab, a promised land in southeast Utah for visitors who want to get their adrenaline pumping.

Surrounded by high canyon walls of red rocks, there are several ways to scale the heights whether its hiking, taking an ATV tour of the back country, or four-wheeling in a Hummer.

Perhaps Moab is best known for its mountain biking on Slickrock, where the action comes from the traction between rubber and sandstone.

Aharabal A Death Trap For All

Srinagar, Sept 16: The Aharabal waterfall in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district, nearly 80 kilometers from here, which saw huge tourist arrival this year is fast turning into a death trap.

At least eight persons drowned during last few months in the waterfall. Authorities blame people for accidents and accuse them (people) of not remaining careful.

“Eight people drowned in the fall this year, out of which six were accidental deaths while as two others committed suicide,” Deputy Commissioner Kulgam Lateef-us- Zaman Deva told Greater Kashmir on Sunday.

Trekking in Bali

Part One

We pulled out of Seminyak, Bali's posh playground, late on a Tuesday afternoon. We'd planned to be on the road much earlier, but circumstances conspired against us, and we wound up leaving at 5:00 p.m.

Driving on the island of Bali is something best left to the locals, but if you aren't easily deterred, it can be done. What you want to avoid is (1) driving at night and (2) in the rain. With our departure from Seminyak at 5:00 pm we assured ourselves of driving at night. Shortly thereafter, it began to rain.

The Power of the Adirondacks

The New York Times travel section is running one of those articles for which the paper is rightfully famous. In a reflective piece, the author discusses the impact on him of hiking in the Adirondacks. It's a well-written piece and enjoyable as the author weaves his reflections with the impact of the landscape on fellow historical traveler William James. The piece also contains some basic Adirondacks travel info and some accommodations advice.
